2022 Year in Review

Happy New Year gentle readers, I hope everyone had a decent holiday. Well, for me from a hobby perspective, 2022 was shit. I had about 6-7 months where I didn't do any miniature painting. I turned 50 in January and I spent most of the year trying to wrap my head around a few things and this affected my desire to painting anything. But it's not hobby related so I'll just leave it at that and move on to the reason I hope you are here for.

I'll start with reviewing my 2022 goals.
1. 28mm French & Indian War - completed this goal right at the end of the year.
2. 28mm Samurai - I wanted to complete 10+ bases. I didn't get a single base done.
3. 28mm Republican Romans -  I wanted to complete 10 bases. Didn't even get this project started.
4. 15mm Ancients/Medievals - Didn't get anything done for this.
5. 15mm Sci-fi - I still haven't decided what to do with these. I'm really leaning on getting rid of all of it but there's probably no market for it.
6. Get Rid of Shit - I got rid of a bunch of boardgames was pretty much all I got rid of. Only picked up a couple games so a definite down size on this front.

Overall, it was a disaster for miniature painting and was my second worse year for miniatures since I first started this blog back in 2010.

Boardgames
I got in 60 games in 2022, which was 9 more than in 2021. I got in a number of games that hadn't been played yet and I need to continue this trend in 2023. I'm also going to get rid of some more games in the coming year.

Books
I set myself a goal of 60 books this year and I ended up reading 67. I've set myself a goal of 65 books this year. My Goodreads page is here: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/145077765-scottm in case you are interested.

So here's my goals for 2023. They're a little more subdued than my 2022 goals.
1. 28mm Samurai - I want to get at least 10 base done this year. I might make this my main paint focus of the year. I need to wrap this up this decade.
2. 28mm Republican Romans - I'd like to get 5 bases done.
3. 28mm Sci-fi - I'd like to finish off ALL my 28mm sci-fi stuff. I don't have a ton but I'd like to get it all done.
4. 15mm Ancients/Medievals - I'd like to finish off the Ancients (very little left for this) and get at least 10 bases of of the Medievals.
5. Terrain - I've got a bunch of terrain pieces not started or half done. I need to finish all this stuff.
6. Get Rid of Shit - I'm going to do another boardgame sell off, maybe in the spring. And I still have a small pile of unassembled figs to get rid of.

A fairly lofty set of goals, not as much as 2022 but still a fair bit. Hopefully I can stay focused, but we shall see. Have a good year everyone.

2021 Year in Review

Happy New Year everyone and I hope everyone had a nice safe Christmas and New Years. Well, there goes another less than fun year. Maybe 2022 will be better.

So I'm, going to start this year with a review of my 2021 goals.
1. 28mm World War II French - completed.
2. 28mm World War II Germans - completed.
3. 28mm World War II Soviets - completed, and this should be ready to hand over to Chris.
4. 54mm War of 1812 - completed.
5. 28mm French & Indian War - I wanted to get 100 figures done and I ended up getting 108 done, so completed.
6. 28mm Samurai - wanted to get 4 bases done, but I only got 3 bases done. 75% completed.
7. Star Wars Legion - completed.
8. 15mm Sci-fi - did absolutely nothing with this. Still don't know what I'm going to do with it all.
9. 15mm Ancients/Medievals - wanted to get 6 bases of Ancients and 10 bases of Medievals done. Didn't get any Medievals done but got 15 bases of Ancients done. So 50% done this goal.

Overall I completed 6 goals and 2 others well on their way. Pretty good I have to say. I got 353 figs done, which is the most since 2014 and the most posts since 2012. Pretty good overall, and that's with the rather lax work I did over the summer months.

Boardgames
I got in 51 games, which was 7 more than in 2020. I spent the latter part of the year starting to dig into the unplayed pile. I need to get these games to the table and figure out if they're worth keeping. Also this year, I think I'm going to do a purge, I have at least 30 games that I'd like to get rid of.

Books
In case anyone is remotely interested in this, I got an astonishing 80 books read, of which 16 were audiobooks. My 'to read' shelf is a few hundred books long so I've got reading for a number of years. I also started a Goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/145077765-scottm

So here's my goals for 2022.
1. 28mm French & Indian War - complete everything I have.
2. 28mm Samurai - so I'm working on three forces, with one force almost done. I need to acquire a bunch more cavalry to do everything I want to. So my goal for this will be to complete 10+ bases.
3. 28mm Republican Romans - I want to start on this force to oppose my Carthaginians. I'd like to get 10 bases done.
4. 15mm Ancients/Medievals - I want to get all the remaining Ancients completed and get at least 20 bases of Medievals done.
5. 15mm Sci-fi - need to do something with these, just don't know what.
6. Get Rid of Shit - I need to thin down the stuff I have. As mentioned above, I've got at least 30 boardgames that I need to get rid of. I've also got a small box of unassembled figs that I need to get rid of.

Hopefully this year will be a little better than the last. Have a good year everyone.

2020 Year in Review

Happy New Year all and I hope everyone had a safe Christmas and New Years. I think it's safe to say that we can all bid a good riddance to the train wreck that was 2020.

So let's start with the review of my goals for this part year.
1. 28mm World War II French - I actually completed this. Literally on the last day of the year a package arrived from Warlord with some additional figs, so I'm not counting those.
2. 28mm World War II Germans - I actually don't think I did anything for this army this year. I only have a handful of figs that are assembled and ready for paint. I do have a bunch of submachinegun equipped guys and a number of machinegun teams ('cause that's what Germans need is more machineguns). Overall it's not a lot left really.
3. 54mm War of 1812 - I didn't touch this project at all.
4. 28mm French & Indian War - didn't complete all the boxes I had and definitely didn't get a game in. I did get a bunch done but I think I added enough new figs to the pile to make it even bigger. Hmm.
5. 28mm Samurai - my goal was to get 4 bases done and I managed to do 5 bases in all.
6. Star Wars Legion - I've got everything done except for 2 vehicles.
7. 15mm Sci-fi - I only had the one faction left and I did get all the infantry done. I do have a bunch of power suits and walkers still to do.
8. Counterblast - I did get all my figs completed, No games of course.

So out of the 8 goals I had set, I got 3 accomplished and a couple others well on their way. One of the projects that I really wanted to work on this year was to work on early war Soviets for a friend. I really got a ton of these done, so that's probably my key painting highlight of the year.

So for 2021 here's my goals or what I'm focusing on might be a better way of putting it:
1. 28mm World War II French - complete this army.
2. 28mm World War II Germans - complete this army.
3. 28mm World War II Soviets - complete this army.
4. 54mm War of 1812 - complete the units I have left.
5. 28mm French & Indian War - complete at least 100 figures. This should cover I think 75% of my F&IW paint pile.
6. 28mm Samurai - get 4 bases done. Commands & Colors Samurai Battles is out this year so I'd like to be able to field a game of this. I'll have to get a mat somewhere. . .
7. Star Wars Legion - complete everything I have.
8. 15mm Sci-fi - complete the last army and I need to get building some terrain. Or just complete the figs and get rid of it all. Have to realistically think about whether I'm going to actually use it. More I think about it, may just finish painting the figs and get rid of them all.
9. 15mm Ancients/Medievals - I'd like to get at least 6 bases of Ancients and 10 bases of Medievals done.

That's a lot of figs to get painted. I didn't add anything for my Carthaginian army as it's pretty much done (although I do have a bunch I can add to it) and I'd like to maybe get started on the Romans. We shall see.

I definitely need to get some of my figs to the table this year and get more boardgaming in as last year was...bad. I really miss my boardgaming night. Realistically though vaccines for the general public probably won't be arriving till at least late spring, so the first part of the year will be a bust.

Well, here's to everyone's continued health and have a good productive year!

Year in Review

Happy New Year all, I hope everyone's holidays were decent.  As the Analogue Hobbies Paint Challenge http://thepaintingchallenge.blogspot.com/ is in full swing, I expect my post count for the next few months to be more frequent.

I don't have any figs to start this post off with, so I'll just jump right into my review of the year. Let's review what I did this year compared to what I wanted to actually get done.
1. 28mm World War II French - complete this army - this didn't get done but I only have 3 vehicles/guns left and they're on my paint table right now.
2. 28mm World War II Germans - complete this army - this didn't get done at all. Still have a bunch of figures and vehicles to be completed.
3. Frostgrave - finish all the figures I have - finished most of it but I still have a handful of Gnolls to paint up.
4. 54mm War of 1812 - complete all the units I have left - didn't touch any of this. I don't have much left but I just didn't get to it. I think I only have 1 gun and crew and some casualty figures left.
5. 28mm Samurai - complete the first army and do at least half of the second army - I'm pretty much done the first army and I think I've started on the second one. Needless to say this project barely got moved along.
6. 28mm Carthaginians - complete this army - did almost nothing with this project. I think the only thing I wanted to do with this project is get a couple elephants.
7. Star Wars Legion - complete the core box set - didn't really start the core box besides Vader and Luke. I did paint up a couple other boxes though.
8. Terrain - complete all of my unbuilt/unpainted terrain - this didn't get done although I did get a pile of buildings done for my MayDay game.

Hmm, what did I get done last year? I did get a number of fantasy monsters done for whenever I get around to playing Warlords of Erewhon. So here are my goals for this year:

1. 28mm World War II French - complete this army - shouldn't be a problem as I only have 3 things left to do.
2. 28mm World War II Germans - complete this army - this shouldn't be a problem as I really don't have that much left to do.
3. 54mm War of 1812 - complete all the figures I have left over - this really, really should be easy to do as I've got almost nothing left.
4. 28mm French & Indian War - complete the boxes and figures I have left and try to get a game to the table sometime this year.
5. 28mm Samurai - do at least 4 bases of Samurai/Ashigaru. I'm not going to set myself a huge goal of trying to get the army done as I know that won't happen.
6. Star Wars Legion - get all my figs painted. I do have them all primed and ready to go and I'm hoping to get a fair number of them painted during the paint challenge.
7. 15mm Sci-fi - I need to get these done and to the table otherwise I might as well get rid of them. I am painting some right now for the paint challenge so I'm hoping this motivated me.
8. Counterblast - complete all the figs I currently have and get a few games to the table. As this game only requires a few figs per side this should be an easy goal. All the figs I do have left are primed and ready to go.

It's not really a goal but I am going to be painting a Soviet early war army for a friend for Chain of Command here in the short term so that may cause some things to be pushed further down the queue.

Oof, this does sound like a lot but it really isn't that bad. The key is just to stay motivated and I had a problem with that (and usually do) about halfway through the year. We'll see what happens this year.

Well, here's to the new year and good gaming!

Frostgrave Monsters & Year in Review

Happy New Year, Happy Holidays etc. etc. As the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge is in full swing, my rate of posts for the next few months will be picking up. This post is a small number of fantasy monsters that will be used in Frostgrave. First up is a pair of larger monsters.

This is a Wizkids Umber Hulk and a Reaper Bones Carrion Worm. Both figures were dead easy and quick to paint up. The Umber Hulk could be used as a Devourer (at least I think that was my thought process) and the Carrion Worm could be used as a Giant Worm.

Had a strange occurence with the Worm. I primed it white, it sat for almost two months and when I went to paint it, it was still tacky. Never had that problem with Bones, but this thing wasn't like the other Bones figures, it's kind of . . . rubbery. Weird.

These are a Reaper Bones Blood Demon and a pair of Wizkids Myconids. The Blood Demon could be used as a Vaplorhine and the Myconids will go nicely with my 'official' Violent Fungus.

And lastly are two packs of Reaper metal Dungeon Vermin.
The centipedes could be used as Amplipedes.

As we are now in 2019, I should review what i did this past year compared to what my plans were.
1. 28mm World War II French - complete this army.
I didn't get this completed as I ended up getting a few more things for it. Everything I have left though is scheduled to be completed in the Paint Challenge.
2. 28mm World War II Germans - paint up at least half the figures I currently have.
Completed!
3. Frostgrave - finish all the figures I currently have.
Didn't get this completed but everything I have left though is scheduled to be completed in the Paint Challenge.
4. 54mm War of 1812 - paint up at least 1 unit.
Completed!
5. 28mm Samurai - complete one side.
Didn't get this completed although it's almost done. Maybe another couple bases.
6. 28mm Carthaginians - complete this army so I can eventually start on the Romans.
Again, I didn't get this completed although it's almost done. Maybe another couple bases.
7. Sarissa Terrain - paint up at least some of the Sarissa Precision buildings I have.
Completed! I ended up painting most of them.

So for this year my goals will be almost the same:
1. 28mm World War II French - complete this army.
2. 28mm World War II Germans - complete this army.
3. Frostgrave - finish all the figures I currently have.
4. 54mm War of 1812 - complete all the units that I have left.
5. 28mm Samurai - complete the first army and do at least half of the second army.
6. 28mm Carthaginians - complete this army.
7. Star Wars Legion - complete the core box set (although I have no intention of actually using Legion. I'd like to give the old West End Games miniature rules a go).
8. Terrain - complete all of my unbuilt/unpainted terrain.

Hopefully I can get most of these things done this year. The Paint Challenge will go a long way towards completing these.

Till next time!

Partisan, Slingers and 2017 in Review

The other day I completed a couple sets of figures covering two vastly different periods. First up is a batch of plastic Victrix Greek slingers.

I have these based up for either Impetus, Sword and Spear or Hey Seize Her! (Hail Caesar). These are part of my ongoing Carthaginian project.

Next up is a small patch of World War 2 French partisans. These are the Group Franc pack from Crusader Miniatures.

I'm adding these to my final tally for 2017 as the vast bulk of them were done in 2017.

Rolling of my paint table is a group of Dropfleet PHR ships and they should be posted up sometime on the weekend. After that I've got a batch of 25 Frostgrave cultists on my paint table. I'm going to be hopefully pushing a fair bit of figures out in the next few months as I'm partaking in the Analogue Hobbies Annual Paint Challenge https://thepaintingchallenge.blogspot.ca/

The second part of this post is my review of 2017. In January I set myself the following goals:
1. 28mm World War II French - complete this army.
          - I still have a fair number of pieces to complete as I picked up a bit more last year
2. 28mm World War II Germans - get at least the starter box completed.
          - this was partially completed
3. Frostgrave - paint up the small assortment of figures I do have.
          - this was also partially completed
4. 54mm War of 1812 - paint up at least the bulk of what I have left.
          - I only painted up one unit, still a bunch left
5. 28mm Samurai - paint up at least 2 bases of figures.
          - this goal was accomplished
6. 28mm Carthaginians - do up at least 4 base of units.
          - this goal was accomplished

For 2018 I'm setting myself the following goals (similar to 2017):

1. 28mm World War II French - complete this army.
2. 28mm World War II Germans - paint up at least half the figures I currently have.
3. Frostgrave - finish all the figures I currently have
4. 54mm War of 1812 - paint up at least 1 unit
5. 28mm Samurai - complete one side (probably only need a half dozen more bases at the most)
6. 28mm Carthaginians - complete this army so I can eventually start on the Romans
7. Sarissa Terrain - paint up at least some the Sarissa Precision buildings I have

It's a fair bit to get done and motivation is my main problem for not getting it done. Hopefully 2018 will be better than last year.

2016 Year in Review

Well, another year has gone by and I can probably safely say good riddance to 2016. As it is now January 1, 2017 it's time to reflect on what I did for gaming in the past year.

Miniatures

Back in January of 2016 I set the following goals:

1. War Rocket - paint the Valkeeri fleet (shouldn't be a problem as I've already started them).
2. 28mm Samurai - paint up 4 base of figures.
3. 28mm World War II French - complete the items I now have.
4. 28mm World War II Germans - start this force and get at least the started box completed.
5. Martian Front - complete my figures and paint up the remaining bulk of Terry's Martians.
6. Retro Raygun - paint up the new figures I do have on hand.
7. 28mm Carthaginians - complete this army and possible start on a period Roman army.
8. 54mm War of 1812 - paint up at least 1 unit.
9. Terrain - paint up at least half of my 28mm buildings.

I completed #1 and #6. I did get some of #3 completed but I kept adding new figures to my pile so it never got completed either (although I did get close). With the exception of the Carthaginians (that I started) I didn't even work on any of the other goals. Oh well.

So for 2017, I'm going to set myself the following goals:

1. 28mm World War II French - complete this army.
2. 28mm World War II Germans - get at least the started box completed.
3. Frostgrave - paint up the small assortment of figures I do have.
4. 54mm War of 1812 - paint up at least the bulk of what I have left.
5. 28mm Samurai - paint up at least 2 bases of figures ( I really need to move this project along).
6. 28mm Carthaginians - do up at least 4 bases of units.

Hopefully I can do better than I did in 2016.

Boardgames

This year I played a large assortment of boardgames but I didn't play as many matches as I've played in the past couple years. This is probably due to the fact the last third of the year I was working on a work project that took up an extraordinary amount of my time. So in 2016 I played 49 different games with a total of 101 matches. My top 3 games (by matches played) were #1 Kingdom Builder (7 matches) and a tie for #2 and #3 with Firefly and Eldritch Horror (6 matches each).  I'm hoping to get more wargames played in the coming year as wargames form a considerable chunk of the games I own.

Sitting on my paint table right now is the trio of French trucks which I may finish tonight, a half dozen 28mm aliens, a squad of French Senegalese, a squad of partisans and a small handful of Frostgrave figures. Here's to 2017!

2015 Year in Review & 2016 Goals

Happy New Year! Now that 2015 is complete I can look back on what I accomplished and which of my goals I completed and which ones I failed at.

Miniatures

For my goals for 2015, I didn't do very good at all.
1. War Rocket - paint the Valkeeri. -> I just started this in the last few days.
2. 15mm Ancients - finish off my Hittites. -> never got to these.
3. Terrain - I've got a few more 15mm buildings to paint up. I've also got 11 28mm European buildings to paint up. -> never got to these.
4. 28mm Samurai - paint up 4 bases. -> complete 2 bases.
5. 54mm War of 1812 - finish off everything I have. -> didn't get to any of this.
6. Martian Front - I painted up a pile of these figures. On the downside it looks like the company that makes this game is now kaput so it doesn't look like I'm going to get the remained of my Kickstarter materials. Win some - lose some I guess.
7. 28mm World War II French - finish my French (at least what I have). -> I finished what I had but I've since purchased a bunch more vehicles.

I ended up painting a number of 15mm DBA armies, started a 28mm Carthaginian army and painted up a number of Retro Raygun figures instead. So for 2016, here are my goals:

These are pretty lofty goals but hopefully I can do better than the dismal showing I did in 2015.

Boardgames

This was another crazy year for boardgaming. Compared to 2014 where I played 144 matches of 36 different games, this year I played 143 matches of 50 different games. My top 3 games were:
#1 Carcassonne - 9 matches (a favourite of a friend of mine)
#2 & #3 Cosmic Encounter & Elder Sign tie - 8 matches

Hopefully this year will be a continuation of the past two years. I definitely need to get more board war-games in though as this year was lacking for those.

So good bye to 2015 and hello to 2016!

More French & Year in Review

Today on the last day of 2014 I finished off another batch of World War II French. First up is another squad of infantry.
And finally is a Panhard 178 armoured car.

Next up on my paint table is a pair of French Somua S35's and a Char D-1. Then it will be onto my Martian Front figures. I've got 9 tripods primed and ready for paint and I'll need to assemble and paint 2 Slaver tripods, a bunch of drones, a Land Ironclad and maybe the Red Martian before MayDay. No problem.

Year in Review - Miniatures

Looking back on my goals I had originally set at the end of 2013 I see I did mediocre at best.
1. War Rocket - never got to the Valkeeri
2. 15mm Ancients - I got quite a number of Hittite bases completed. The army isn't quite finished yet, close but not quite. I kind of burned myself out painting them and the NK Egyptians.
3. 15mm terrain - I got a fair bit done. A handful of buildings were completed and I painted up the trenches for Terry and myself for the Martian Front.
4. 25mm sci-fi - did nothing and I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. Maybe I'll get back into it sometime in 2015. If I haven't by the end of 2015 then I might as well get rid of it all.
5. 28mm Samurai - I didn't do any this year.
6. 54mm War of 1812 - I got a TON of these done this year. I've got some more primed ready to go.
7. Martian Front - I didn't get quite as much painted this year as everything hasn't come yet.

So for the coming year here's my goals:
1. War Rocket - paint the Valkeeri.
2. 15mm Ancients - finish off my Hittites. I'll probably hold off for at least 6 months to build interest back up.
3. Terrain - I've got a few more 15mm buildings to paint up. I've also got 11 28mm European buildings from Sarissa Precision to paint up for World War II.
4. 28mm Samurai - I've got to get going on this so I'll set the same goal I had last year: at least 4 bases done.
5. 54mm War of 1812 - finish off everything I have. I've probably got at least half a dozen units left to do.
6. Martian Front - as Terry and I are running a game at MayDay I've got a bunch of painting to do and I'll be getting to it as soon as I'm done my French.
7. 28mm World War II - finish my French (at least what I have). Warlord is going to be releasing more French so I imagine I'l be ordering more. And like a crackhead, I've actually ordered some Germans so they should arrive in a few weeks.

Year in Review - Boardgames

This year was crazy for boardgames. In 2013 I played 96 matches of 29 different games. This year I played 144 matches of 36 different games. Probably the main reason behind the big jump is a good friend moved to within a couple blocks of me so we've been getting in a lot of games.

My top 3 games were:
#1: Carcassonne - 18 games
#2: Kingdom Builder - 14 games
#3: Lords of Waterdeep & Twilight Struggle - 11 games

My game collection this year grew quite substantially this year. I really hope to get in more plays of my wargames as I only got in about 25 games this year. The ones I really want to get more plays or any plays in are Eclipse, Conflict of Heroes, Friedrich and Sekigahara.

So I'll bid farewell to 2014 and I look forward to much gaming in 2015. Have a safe New Year!

2013 Year in Review

Happy New Year to everyone, I hope you had an enjoyable and safe holiday. Now that 2013 is over and we're into a new year I have a chance to assess my gaming for the year. I'm going to break it into two groups: miniatures and boardgaming.

Miniatures

Compared to my three previous years of writing this blog, 2013 was an excellent year for my miniature painting with a whopping 606 painted. This was mainly due to the large number of 15mm figs I painted. Painting the 15mm figs is a lot faster than painting 28mm or 54mm. Going over my goals I set out at the end of 2012:
1. War Rocket: this goal was partially completed and I didn't end up picking up the Valkeeri fleet till the Black Friday sale in November.
2. Forge World models: Not completed as I didn't get to any of these this year.
3. 15mm Sci-fi: didn't get any of this started and I haven't even found a ruleset I want to use yet though I do have a few I need to look at. I basically set this project aside for most of the year.
4. 15mm Terrain: er, yeah about that…
5. 15mm NKE: finished them and I'm well on my way to having their opponents completed!
6. 28mm Samurai: as I only set out to get a few bases done this year I'm going to say mission accomplished as I got a couple done.
7. 1/200 Robotech: er, yeah about that…

Overall not very good, but that being said I did start a new project: 54mm War of 1812 and I'm moving through that at a decent clip. So my goals for 2014:

1. War Rocket: complete the Valkeeri fleet
2. 15mm Ancients: finish my Hittites and do a few more NKE so I can maybe play using Hail Ceasar.
3. 15mm Terrain: just get more done. I've got some more buildings to do up.
4. 15mm Sci-fi: find a ruleset I want to use and maybe rebase my vehicles as I think the basing is crap.
5. 28mm Samurai: do at least another 4 bases including some Samurai bases.
6. 54mm War of 1812: complete decent sized armies for both sides able to fight in the majority of battles that took place.
7. All Quiet on the Martian Front: comes out soon and I'm going to have a ton to paint up so I'd like to get everything done I'll have for this.

Like 2013, I'm not going to set myself a goal of painting a specific number of figs.

Boardgames

In 2013 I played 96 matches of 29 different board games. My top 3 played games were:
#1: Elder Sign - 14 games
#2: Arkham Horror - 11 games
#3: C&C Napoleonics & Race For The Galaxy - 8 games

I usually get together with some friends once a month to game but this year we didn't do that very often so for 2014 I hope to get more game nights in.

On my painting table right now are 3 units of 54mm British infantry which should be completed in the next few days and I've still got a batch of Hittites waiting to be completed.
